In an underwhelming year for Indian badminton, PV Sindhu is looking to salvage some pride by winning the Syed Modi International 2024 women's singles title. But the two-time Olympic medallist will have to first contend with fast-rising compatriot, Unnati Hooda. Sindhu, 29, returned just in time to lead the Indian contingent at the Badminton Asia Team Championships in February. And they won.
But what followed was a series of disappointing outings. She was a medal hope at the Paris Olympics, and also the favourites at other events. But it has been a tale of withering hopes.
Yet, the former world no.2 can sign off with a title, at the City of Nawabs where she has played some of her best badminton. The 2017 and 2022 champion is two games away from winning her third Syed Modi International title and matching Saina Nehwal's (2009, 2014, 2015) record three wins.
Entering the BWF Super 300 event as the top seed, Sindhu dropped only one game, in the second round against Ira Sharma (21-10, 12-21, 21-15). In the opener, she defeated Anmol Kharb (21-17, 21-15), and then registered a straight game win over China's Dai Wang.
Hooda, still 17, enjoyed smooth sailing en route semi-final. The Rohtak girl reeled off straight game victories against Thai pair Thamonwan Nithiittikrai (21-12, 21-16) and Pornpicha Choeikeewong (21-18, 22-20) before taming Ishika Jaiswal of the United States (21-16, 21-9) in the quarter-final.
Expect Unnati Hooda to test PV Sindhu's resolve to the hilt in their first big-stakes meeting. With a couple of BWF World Tour titles (both Super 100), Hooda is aiming for a big scalp.
The winner of the Unnati Hooda vs PV Sindhu clash will take on either Lalinrat Chaiwan of Thailand or Chinese Wu Luo Yu on Sunday's final.
